Step outside and you're in the middle of the trendiest shopping district in Antwerp. The mix of exclusive designer shops, vintage boutiques, galleries and small cafés is inspiring for every weekend.

  • Low emission zone in Antwerp

Antwerp is working on better and healthier air in the city, which is why it introduced a low emission zone in 2017. Are you planning to travel to Antwerp by car this summer? Find out in this newsletter how you can safely enter the low emission zone by registering before entering to avoid a fine.

The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) comprises the entire city centre and Linkeroever/the Left Bank. The zone is designated with a special road sign. Vehicles will be checked with automatic number plate recognition cameras. If you enter the zone with a vehicle that is not admitted, you will receive a fine.

May my car enter the zone?

Your vehicle’s Euro standard will determine whether your vehicle may enter the zone. Click herefor the online test. You will immediately know whether your vehicle is admitted to the LEZ.

Mandatory registration for all foreign number plates (except Dutch number plates)

Do you want to enter the zone with a foreign number plate (not Belgian or Dutch)? Then you must use this tool, and register once-only, even if your vehicle may enter the zone. Registration is free and can be done up to 24 hours after entering the zone. There is no need to register a vehicle that may enter the zone, with a Dutch number plate. The control of Dutch vehicles is done automatically based on the database of Dutch vehicles.

Temporary permits for some vehicles

You can request a temporary permit against payment for some vehicles that do not comply with the conditions for entry. This includes diesel vehicles with Euro standard 3 without a DPF (diesel particulate filter) or vehicles older than 40 years. You must request and pay this permit beforehand.

LEZ day pass

Do you drive a vehicle that does not comply with the conditions and is not eligible for a temporary permit? Do you want to enter the LEZ anyway? Then you can purchase an LEZ day pass maximum eight times a year. This pass is available onlineor can be purchased from the parking meters in the city centre.

LEZ machines

Did you enter the low emission zone by accident? Are you on your way to Antwerp but not certain whether your vehicle may actually enter the low emission zone? Then pay for your entry at one of the six LEZ machines. You can find these machines along some of the main access routes to the city, in public places, such as petrol stations or car parks. You can also check and register your vehicle at these terminals or buy an LEZ day pass or pay for your entry to avoid a fine.
